The urban strategy for this expansion proposal for a 1960’s high school building follows an idea of complementarity and completion of the existing complex
The proposal minimizes the new built area, suggesting instead the repurposing of existing spaces for the new desired functions. The phasing of the building stages was carefully considered to allow continuous operation of the school’s activities throughout the process
A new courtyard becomes the hub and focal point of the academic life, connecting all levels of the pre-existing building and the new expansion comprised of an auditorium, library and indoor sports facility
The courtyards at the core of each of the existing class pavilions are re-imagined as bio-climatic halls, covered, flexible in use and designed to ensure the passive adjustment of air quality and temperature without the need to resort to energy consuming systems and infrastructure
The urban strategy for this expansion proposal for a 1960’s high school building follows an idea of complementarity and completion of the existing complex, creating an urban “front” for the new ensemble.
The proposal minimizes the new built area, suggesting instead the repurposing of existing spaces for the new desired functions. The phasing of the building stages was carefully considered to allow continuous operation of the school’s activities throughout the process.
A new courtyard becomes the hub and focal point of the academic life, connecting all levels of the pre-existing building and the new expansion comprised of an auditorium, library and indoor sports facility.
The courtyards at the core of each of the existing class pavilions are re-imagined as bio-climatic halls, covered, flexible in use and designed to ensure the passive adjustment of air quality and temperature without the need to resort to energy consuming systems and infrastructure. It highlights a design strategy looking to complete the school complex with the new contemporary additions while improving, within a strict budget, the venerable pre-existing constructions so they become comfortable but cost and energy efficient. This seems to be, still, the safest bet to expand a building’s useful life.
