The competition called to create a new life for the historic complex of the old slaughterhouse in Lugano, Switzerland.
The programme presented a potentially strong synergy with the Swiss city, proposing a mixed use of co-work and co-study areas, events venue, cultural centre and a student residence.
Even though the old slaughterhouse is a morphologically well-defined complex, it must not be understood as an “island”. Departing from this consideration, our main goal has been that of researching a way of increasing the permeability and openness of the ensemble to the urban context, enhancing the many components of the new civic programme. We proposed a continuation of the system established by the pre-existences, built or public spaces, without compromising the precise limits of the complex, maintaining an idea of unity: the project aims to help define a homogeneous, compact system within the urban fabric.
