In the upper floor, reserved for classrooms, all classes are arranged along the facade. In the middle, a flexible open space can be used for learning activities and workshops, with abundant lighting made possible by the generous skylights on the gabled roof.
The structural expression of the upper floor is strongly characterised by the serial structure of the room-high wood lattice girders that cross the entire span of the new extension.
cross section
the main entrance of the new building is clearly visible at the junction between the two schoolyards, in the center of the school area.
The new expansion for the Muttenz high school occupies the plot corner as the keystone of the school grounds. It fits in as a final element in the existing urban context of a small-scale public forum defined by the local Parrish and the scattered preexisting school buildings.
The new expansion is strongly characterised by a gabled roof that mediates between the domestic scale of the surrounding environment and the larger volume of the school complex: a new place and a new address to the school premises.
The quiet street facade faces the gardens of the neighbouring houses and the footpath. The partly sunken double gym reduces the building height, so that the new building becomes well integrated into the small-scale environment.
The building is devised as an hybrid structure where all resistant elements in contact with the ground are built with recycled concrete, while all resistant elements above ground are built with wood based systems.
