Pico is arguably the most striking island of the Atlantic archipelago of Azores. The sight of the lone mountain towering over the ocean and the stark volcanic landscape; the all-encompassing filigree of man-made basaltic walls; the green vineyards sprouting from the rock and the briny wines: all blend in a single impression of magnetic fascination that often compels its visitors to come back over and over again.

This project proposes the conversion of an uninteresting dwelling with a stunning view into an island refuge - a getaway home in the Atlantic.

The existing house stands in the corner of a steep plot facing South, having suffered several additions through time to increase its comfort and adequacy to modern living standards. The proposal removes all but the original basalt masonry walls, and defines a sequence of 3 spaces: an outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean below, one single living space, with an open kitchen and a new service volume with a bath and two alcoves in the back.

The cistern, testimony of the ingenuity of island dwellers to solve the ages-old problem of preserving fresh water, will be restored. The pre-existing walls and new additions will be unified by a lime whitewash paint and a new corrugated steel roof. We look for straightforward materiality and finishing. Dark blue shutters outside, a continuous pinewood floor in the living area and warm concrete floors in the extension… A small plunge pool to indulge in some sunset bathing.

Mindful that an island refuge should provide a different experience from normal quotidian life, the project proposes an unpretentious spatial sequence that invites hedonistic contemplation and the enjoyment of simple, essential pleasures. Time is the real luxury.
