UIL ALCÂNTARA

Public competition: third prize

This pilot project proposes a new municipal building to house people experiencing homelessness, in the Alcântara neighborhood, in Lisbon. It combines practicality, sustainability, and a strong architectural identity.

Organized as an L-shaped, three-storey volume, the building defines a new urban corner. Its main façade opens towards the Alcântara Valley, while the entrance, on a quieter street, is marked by an expanded public space and shared community facilities such as a common room and laundry.

The apartments are arranged along galleries, with double orientation to both the street and the courtyard. Each unit includes a prefabricated service module with kitchen and bathroom, allowing for efficiency, cost-control, and scalability.
The project balances urban presence with a human scale, creating dignified homes and spaces that encourage community life.
