The competition sought to give new life to the historic complex of the former slaughterhouse in Lugano, Switzerland.

The programme outlined a set of uses with strong potential synergies for the city, combining co-working and co-study spaces, an events venue, a cultural centre, and student housing.
Although the old slaughterhouse is a morphologically well-defined ensemble, it should not be perceived as an “island”. Starting from this premise, our main objective was to explore ways of increasing the permeability and openness of the complex to its urban surroundings, thereby enhancing each component of the new civic programme.

Our proposal extends the spatial logic established by the existing built structures and public spaces, without compromising the clear boundaries of the complex or its sense of coherence. The project seeks to consolidate a unified and compact system fully integrated into the urban fabric.
